Canada is the convener country in the world when it comes to helping immigrants settle and integrate quickly into their new home. This, however, does not mean that newcomers to Canada have always had an easy time getting jobs.
Census statistics show recent immigrants have a lower employment rate (62.2%) than non-immigrants (71.7%), and the unemployment rate of visible minority immigrants women (9.7%) is higher than both visible minority (8.5%) and non-visible minority (6.4%) immigrants men.
With aging manpower, Canada is actively engaging highly skilled foreign workers to come to Canada to fill open jobs and create new jobs opportunities to help grow Canada’s economy.
Canada Announces $10 million to help newcomers find work
To help highly skilled immigrants find work and integrate into the job market faster, the government of Canada announced a $10 million under the Foreign Credential Recognition (FCR) Program on March 7, 2019, to help highly trained skilled immigrants to Canada get their credentials recognized, obtain Canadian work experience and find jobs.
In the Employment and Labour Minister’s press release, “Helping immigrants obtain help to have their foreign credentials recognized will allow them to integrate into the Canadian labour force faster, which is essential to growing our economy and strengthening the middle class. By this Call for Concepts, we are giving more immigrants a fair chance at success in Canada.”
According to Canada, a highly skilled newcomer is someone who holds an internationally obtained post-secondary degree or certification, diploma that is recognized in Canada. There are plenty of highly skilled workers and apprentices who would like to work in Canada.
Fortunately, Canada needs them too. The Express Entry gives newcomers an opportunity to obtain permanent residence in Canada. With the government’s new commitment, they will have a chance to get their skills recognized.
How Canada is Boosting Immigration
According to the Canadian government, the country hopes to boost its intake of immigrants by 2021. At the moment, they receive 350, 000 new immigrants each year. The Immigration Minister, Ahmed Hussen, stated that the government has started a three-year plan to increase immigration.
Most of the immigrants will help Canada address their problem of labour shortfalls. Canada targets immigrants with specific skills that are considered to be beneficial to the Canadian economy.
In some parts of Canada, the workforce is either insufficient or too old. Immigrants may help those parts develop a competitive edge. The government’s efforts in increasing immigration and helping newcomers find work faster present Canada as a friendly country to the rest of the world.
Finally, economic immigrants also have a chance to use their skills to enhance their living standards and help Canada meet its economic aspirations. The admission of such newcomers is based on their age, skills, work experience and level of education
